Sustainability and our Eco-Philosophy
Please read before booking
Castelo Vendom was designed with sustainability and respect for nature at its heart, so that you can enjoy your holiday in a tranquil, natural environment. The ecolodge is an open, airy space where you can enjoy the cool night air and garden greenery.
Our peaceful garden is built around an ecological pool, free of chlorine and chemicals. We use only natural minerals like sand, carbon and UV light to keep it clean and clear as spring water. A gentle waterfall provides a calming atmosphere with the natural sound of water mingling with the singing of birds.
An organic vegetable garden provides much of our fresh vegetables and herbs used in our home-made cooking.
Biologically recycled water is used to water the garden, and all our electricity is produced by local renewable energy sources like the Ceara wind turbines.
POLITICS AND ETHICS
Built to ecological standards and with respect for the environment, we are committed to:
• Develop clean energy building techniques
• Use local resources to reduce our carbon footprint
• Involve the local population
The main water supply is through groundwater wells and hydrolic pumps, but it is also supplemented or replaced as much as possible by:
1 / Rainwater
Gutters will collect rainwater in containers which can then be used for the garden or cleaning.
2 / Grey water
This will be recycled naturally using a filtration system of plants and minerals, with a biodigestor.
The simple system consists of water passing between different tanks before being filtered by specific plants.
The resulting water is clean and can be returned to ground.
The weather is hot enough to enjoy fresh water, so we do not produce hot water here as it is unnecessary.
NATURAL AREAS AND THE VEGETATION
The Castelo Vendom project respects the local environment. The coast, being comprised of mostly sand, supports little vegetation. It is therefore not possible to cultivate large areas of grass without overly demanding water requirements. So we have planted a small area of grass but with a special filtration for water. As a result indigenous plants such as palms, cactus, cashew, eucalyptus, mango and other fruit trees will be given priority. Other species capable of surviving the semi-arid climate have been also introduced, as well as those capable of filtering grey water.
In order to collect water and allow other plants to flourish, we have developed a compost of layers through recycling organic waste, such as:
Natural organic waste - leaves, wood, bark, etc.
Food-based waste - peelings, tea, coffee, eggshells, leftover vegetables, fruits, etc.
Small stationery - paper, card, cardboard, etc.
All these are passed to our waste compost or clutch to create our own soil to nurture new arable land and nourish the organic farm.
Natural ventilation is preferred to air conditioning, which requires to be repaired very often and which is heavy in energy consumption.
FOOD AND SELF-SUFFICIENCY
In order to meet demand, we are developing an organic vegetable garden where we are planting and growing our own fruits and vegetables.
In order to recycle wastewater, it is essential that customers use organic products for personal hygiene.
Within this structure we will ultimately produce these products: soaps, shampoos, creams and more. A spa will be an option with products available for sale.
We make our own bread, jams, fruit cachaças, fruit juices. We provide guests with free source water during meals and in the bedrooms. We recommend against customers consuming industrially processed food and drinks and do not sell any on site.
Toilet paper is an ecological disaster for the planet, and it is also damaging for our biodigestor system as well as your intimate flora. Therefore we use toilet showers and towels for the bathroom instead.
Because there is no public water treatment system, please do not use toilet paper and do not throw rubbish inside the toilet.
The pool water is free of chemical products and is cleaned using a natural filter system, so we ask you to take a shower with soap in order to remove sunscreen and other chemicals before entering the pool. If you do not, the water will become contaminated in one day and it will not be possible to go in.
We will take all your organic wastes for retreatment and composting.
THANK YOU FOR HELPING US TO PROTECT AND RESPECT THE ENVIRONMENT
CASTELO VENDÔM CREATED OUR OWN LABEL MOVEMENT TO HELP SPREAD WHICH CAN BE SHARED FOR ALL CLEANING ACTIONS IN THE WORLD
"We kitesurfers are committed to protecting the beaches on which we sail and we are determined to preserve as much as we can.
We will partner with the institution associated with it, because protecting our paradise is everyone's business. Let's build together!"
Hotels, pousadas, surf schools, shops etc are invited to join us, share this idea and take action:
- Propose to kitesurfer guests to spend a few hours cleaning the beach. Provide them with bags, and make this a positive experience to share.
- Show them how much you appreciate their efforts with some gifts such as a discount on your services, a meal, a party, or just a hug.
- Put on your wall the Kitesurf Beaches Clean Up logo to encourage others to do the same.
- Share with the Facebook group your actions!
Kitesurfers and friends of our wonderful planet, join us to ensure that our beaches - YOUR BEACHES - remain a paradise, and that not a single animal may be harmed because of humans being irresponsible. Help us keep safe our beautiful paradise."
